3. School Site Plan
This plan should be completed and to the school board in December.
Mike Cawley went over a multi-page handout with overhead projection, listing academic data about student achievement. The district has software which disaggregates data and allows teachers, counselors, and administrators to look at individual results and also class testing results.
Reviewed topics (see handout for additional information):
-API (academic performance index)
Discussion of how to motivate high achieving students not to opt out of the STAR testing. This could be included in the site plan.
-Just for Kids California website: http://www.jftk-ca.org Login: Davis; Password: djusd44 This is a site to examine specific achievement data and the achievement gap.
Even though we are far above the AYP (adequate yearly progress) targets the federal government sets, we see a gap between English learners and those who are socio-economically disadvantaged and the group of all students. There are comparable schools whose data can be displayed next to those of DSHS. Comparisons may be made between ethnic groups, by subject area, by gender, and in many other ways. All results are based on STAR tests.
-Discipline by race/ethnicity
-D and F in two grading periods by race/ethnicity
-Truancy
The information presented should help form the basis for the school goal in the Site Plan, The Single Plan for Student Achievement. Sarah distributed the WASC goals from our last accreditation and review, 2003 and 2006.
Brainstorming goal ideas/questions:
Getting input for specific areas from departments (e.g., math department giving ideas for improving Algebra 1 performance)
Teacher training and programs, such as explicit direct instruction
Styles and tools of teaching
How can money be best spent?
What has been working?
There have been improvements in some numbers, what is the reason? Do
students who are not achieving in some areas have other areas in which
they are succeeding?
More than one goal could be set by the committee
Additional data analysis could occur
Mentoring specific kids who are below basic proficiency
Specific goal suggestions: improving Algebra and English skills; reducing truancy rates.
Working with parents? Parent education
Next month we will write a rough draft of the goals. Members should review the data and work on formulation of ideas.
Meetings are in the Large Conference Room unless otherwise announced. Meetings are from 3:00 – 4:30, although during the allocation process meetings run until 5:00 P.M.
